About us

The Pharmacists’ Defence Association (PDA) is a not-for-profit organisation which aims to act upon and support the needs of individual pharmacists and, when necessary, defend their reputation. We are an organisation that is run by pharmacists for the benefit of pharmacists.

The primary objectives of the PDA are:

• to advance and protect good health by promoting proper standards and best practice in pharmacy;
• to support the safe and effective practice of pharmacists at every stage of their education and career;
• to provide leadership and representation for employed and self-employed pharmacists, and those in training;
• to protect, defend, lobby for and support the interests and reputations of pharmacists;
• to work with and support local, national and international organisations with similar objectives; and
• to facilitate professional indemnity insurance, arrange benefits and undertake any other activities that can support our wider objectives.

• Why do we exist?

  The PDA is the only organisation solely looking after the interests of the individual hospital, community, primary care and locum pharmacist in an increasingly difficult, hostile and employer dominated environment.

  To support and protect your reputation as you practice in your profession and to improve the status and working environment of individual pharmacists, ultimately improving patient care.

  The PDA is affiliated to several wider groups because, just as individuals achieve more by joining together as a Trade Union, we can achieve more by working together.

  Commencing with the origins of UK pharmacy and the developments that have evolved the modern day eco-system and pharmacy practice, the following timeline gives more information on some of the highlights and significant events that have shaped the organisation.

  Our employed team of pharmacists, lawyers and other staff support our networks of representatives and help meet the needs of our members across the UK. Our head office is in Birmingham.
