With the NHS being a key consideration for the new government, the PDA has been keen to engage with the new Secretary of State for Health and Social Care. The PDA wants to emphasise the role that pharmacists employed at the frontline of health care in hospitals, general practices, community pharmacies, and other settings play in directly helping patients and supporting the NHS.
Mr Streeting has already set out the necessity to reform the NHS and has recently commissioned Lord Ara Darzi to lead an investigation to inform future proposals. The PDA has highlighted that pharmacists will have a significant role in delivering any future transformations and that the voice of the workforce is a critical element to any health service redesign and policy decisions.
In the letter, PDA Chairman, Mark Koziol was also eager to emphasise to Mr Streeting that, as the leading representative body and trade union exclusively for pharmacists, there is an expectation that the workforce will be directly engaged through the PDA in tri-partite discussions alongside the government and employer representatives. For example, in relation to community pharmacy contractual framework discussions about the contribution that the pharmacist workforce can make.
