Inclusion is a universal human right and embraces all people irrespective of race, gender, disability, sexuality, religion, socio-economic background or other characteristics. Inclusion seeks equal access and opportunities and eradicating discrimination and intolerance.
At the event, PDA Reps shared their tips on making member meetings inclusive and best practices on representing the views of all members.
Neelum Iqbal, PDA Rep in Tesco shared, “I thoroughly enjoyed the networking session. It was well planned and allowed opportunity for people from different backgrounds to share their thoughts and experiences.”
Lindsey Simons, PDA Student Rep shared, “The PDA networking event helped me to illuminate some critical deficits in not just my own effectiveness in communication but also that of my peers. It helped me to address and adapt my approach to reduce social exclusion in my everyday academic and professional practice and to realise that none of us are perfect – whether you have been practising for years or are still making your way through university, everyone has gaps in this area to hone. This event was great for improving social awareness.”
Nahim Khan, PDA North Regional Committee Rep said, “Being a PDA Union Rep means I want to reach out and engage with as many members as possible so they can share any experiences or concerns. Therefore, it’s important to make a more inclusive and welcoming environment for members. The webinar allowed me to discuss and learn with other reps and therefore I enjoyed it and took a lot away from this.”
Okereke Oluomachi Yvonne, PDA Trainee Rep said, “I was excited to attend the reps networking meeting on inclusion; it was my first time as a recently inducted PDA Trainee Rep. The session gave a new meaning to diversity and inclusion that broadened my understanding. We had thought-provoking breakout room discussions that led to great ideas, and we had the opportunity to hear from each team afterward. It was an insightful meeting with great minds, and I eagerly await more of these sessions.”
