PDA Hospital Rep joins STUC Black Workers’ Committee

On Thursday 13 June 2024, PDA member and NHS Fife Workplace Rep, Sade Abiola was informed of her successful nomination to be co-opted on to the STUC Black Workers’ Committee. She had won the support of a majority of the committee in a vote against several other nominees from our sister Scottish trade unions, to fill the recently vacated women’s seat.

The STUC Black Workers’ Committee leads on campaigns and policy for black trade union members in Scotland and is made up of elected members from delegates at the previous year’s conference. Some of the policy matters the committee works on together include:

  • Challenging the far right
  • Supporting migrants and refugees
  • Palestinian Solidarity
  • Diversity and representation
  • Political education and Antiracism

The committee also plays a leading role organising a number of the events that make up the wider STUC calendar, such as St. Andrew’s Day March and Rally 2024, Black History Month Activities, and Stand Up to Racism UN Anti-Racism Day March and Rally.

Sade is eager to get started and will also be leading the PDA delegation to the STUC Black Workers’ Conference that occurs annually. This year, it is being hosted in the Golden Jubilee Hotel in Clydebank on 28 and 29 September.

Sade said, “I first learnt of the Black Workers’ Committee when I attended the STUC Congress in Dundee this year. So many people joining and banding together, trying to do the right thing, it made me proud of Scotland and happy that there are a lot of principled people who will give their time and their reputation to fight for equality and diversity.

I cannot sit back and do nothing, then complain that things are not moving forward. I am humbled and privileged to represent my colleagues who are like me. I hope that within my time I will make a change. Any change is enough, even if it’s a drop in the ocean because it starts by making a drop. Thank you for electing me.”

This appointment will give the PDA a greater opportunity to work with the STUC and means its contributions in making Scotland and the rest of the UK an Anti-racist nation will be added to that of other unions. The PDA will also have access to a greater platform to reach wider audiences when addressing issues of racial disparity in healthcare training and patient outcomes.
