International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) supports Safer Pharmacies Charter

FIP has become the latest organisation to support the PDA's Safer Pharmacies Charter. The Charter consists of seven commitments to improve safety and care for patients, through better working conditions in UK pharmacy practice.

The announcement comes shortly after the PDA urged all UK pharmacists to take part in the 2024 Safer Pharmacies Survey. The survey will help the PDA to gain a better understanding of the current working environment for pharmacists and could help to improve the wellbeing of those in the profession.

Dr Catherine Duggan, FIP CEO says, “We are pleased to support the PDA’s Safer Pharmacies Charter which defines basic standards to ensure safe practice wherever pharmacists work. The overall objectives of the Charter align with FIP’s development goals and overall mission.”

FIP is the global body representing pharmacy, pharmaceutical sciences, and pharmaceutical education. Through 153 national organisations, allied organisations (including academic institutional members) and individual members, FIP represents over four million pharmacists, pharmaceutical scientists, and pharmaceutical educators around the world.

FIP will aid in distributing the Charter to its members and share it with its Community Pharmacy Section for information purposes.

The PDA became a member of FIP in 2022 and continues to work closely with the organisation to represent the voice of UK pharmacists at a global level. The alliance also gives the PDA significant influence to inform the policies of the World Health Organisation.

The Safer Pharmacies Charter is part of the PDA’s long-running campaign to improve safety and care for patients and the working lives of pharmacists. PDA Director of Policy and Communications, Alison Jones first presented the Safer Pharmacies Charter at the FIP Congress in Brisbane in 2023.

Many organisations have shown support for the Safer Pharmacies Charter such as the BPSA, USDAW and Health Campaigns Together.

The PDA invites all pharmacists, professional bodies, healthcare organisations and pharmacy owners/senior managers to show their support for the campaignget involved.
