• Boots pharmacists prepare for 2021 pay talks

  PDA members at Boots are preparing for the 2021 pay talks with the company in the expectation of a far better deal than last year after the company formally recognised there is a potential crisis of recruitment and retention due to reasons including insufficient rates of pay.

  The PDA support a private member’s bill which has its first reading in Parliament today and hopes to outlaw the practice of “Fire and rehire” which is increasingly being used by employers to cut employee benefits. 

• Help raise the profile of community pharmacy funding in England

  The PDA support the 38 Degrees petition, created by the NPA, that calls on the Westminster government to recompense pharmacies for the extra costs they have incurred by staying open to provide health services during the COVID-19 pandemic. The petition now has almost 100,000 signatures, but needs more to make sure politicians and the general public know about this issue.

  A disappointing report from the three major community pharmacy employer bodies ends with nine recommendations for others to act, but fails to include a single commitment about what the employers will do. 

• PDA publish salary ready reckoner for Boots pharmacists

  “Transparency” is a underpinning principle of the PDA’s objectives for any pay system and the union has produced a “Ready Reckoner” tool to assist union members at Boots in understanding where their pay sits in comparison to "market rates".   

• PDA calls for rethink of decision to end free parking for NHS workers

  The UK government has announced that it is ending a scheme for NHS workers which has provided free parking to those on duty during the COVID-19 emergency response period.

  There have been reports of anomalies in the booking system for Covid-19 vaccination sessions in the Glasgow and Greater Clyde health board area, and allegations that some pharmacists may have used technology to secure multiple shifts ahead of others. 

• PDAU comment on industrial action in Prison Education

  The PDA Union are sending a message of support to UCU members working in prison education who are currently involved in industrial action. The PDA Union is also advising members working in prisons how to care for patients while respecting the strike action. 

• Midcounties sell branches: PDA can support members when their employer changes

  Though a number of community pharmacies are closing, others are still being bought and sold which often means pharmacists may find they have a new employer. As an independent trade union, the PDA can provide support and guidance for members at what can be a worrying time.
