Tribute to Mrs Pat Hoare (nee Willday) FRPharmS: 1945 – 2023

Below is a tribute to Mrs Pat Hoare (nee Willday). Pat was an active member of NAWP for a number of years, both serving on the National Executive Committee and as President from 1994-1996. This tribute has been written by Dr Christine Heading, NAWP Past President.

It was with sadness that NAWP members learned of the death of Pat Hoare.

Pat was a community pharmacist who lived and worked in the Buckinghamshire area. She was active in the National Association of Women Pharmacists for a number of years, and served on the National Executive Committee and as President from spring 1994-1996.

A particular interest of Pat’s was the Women in Pharmacy pack (published in 1991), and its revision as a book published by the Pharmaceutical Press, ‘Careers in Pharmacy’. Such publications may seem routine today, but the WiP pack was so ahead of its time that it was launched by the then Minister of Health, Virginia Bottomley, six months after her announcement of the first-ever career break scheme for NHS employees. As a very competent and successful fundraiser, Pat raised significant sponsorship funds to promote the Careers in Pharmacy project and was the designated fundraiser for the 2005 NAWP Centenary celebrations.

Away from NAWP, she served on the RPSGB Council and also did considerable work in the RPSGB Chiltern region and in its subsequent reincarnations. She was a highly regarded colleague and a formidable exponent of straight talking on all matters (possibly a result of her Birmingham upbringing). On one occasion I recall her being unhappy about the late start time set for an evening meal associated with a NAWP weekend conference. Her comment to me was ‘I wondered whether I was just being difficult by objecting, but then I remembered this is NAWP – we say what we think’.  Well said.

May you rest in peace, Pat.
