Oriel applications are now open for third-year students in England, Scotland and Wales who wish to begin their training in July/August 2022. The application deadline is Wednesday 23 June 2021.

Oriel is the UK wide portal for recruitment to foundation year training. Applicants will use Oriel for all stages of the recruitment process. Oriel is not compulsory and many applying for community placements still chose to apply externally. This year, Oriel includes places for trainees in hospital, community pharmacy and GP practice settings.

The following groups are eligible to apply for foundation training placements via Oriel

  • All current third-year UK MPharm undergraduates. Any current third-year UK MPharm students who have not consented for their School of Pharmacy to provide their details as requested by the PNRO will not be eligible to apply
  • UK MPharm graduates
  • Current Overseas Pharmacists Assessment Programme (OSPAP) students
  • OSPAP graduates
  • Bradford sandwich students who should note they will apply to Oriel via their own vacancy offering, which is separate from the national vacancy offering. For further information contact: fls-placements@bradford.ac.uk.

Changes to the Oriel process for 2021

This year, applicants will be judged only on their performance in the Situational Judgement Test (SJT) and Numeracy assessment. There will be no Multiple Mini Interviews.

Your performance is based solely on these assessments. You will be invited to a Pearson VUE Centre to sit the SJT/numeracy assessments online; the window to book your place will be open between 4 and 18 August 2021, although these dates are subject to change.

Late applicants will not be accepted under any circumstances.

Please note the important dates listed in the handbook relevant to you:

Appendix D for England and Wales and Appendix E for Scotland’s Foundation Trainee Pharmacist Recruitment handbook explains the reasonable adjustments policy. If you qualify for reasonable adjustments, state this on your Oriel application form and email supporting evidence to the Pharmacy Recruitment Team.

The PDA wants all students to experience a fair, open and transparent recruitment process. We can guide and advise student members on any important issues they may face during the application process.

Erika Bruijstens, PDA Student Rep at Robert Gordon University said, “Good luck to everyone applying through Oriel. Your PDA student reps look forward to hearing about pharmacy students experiences so we can make sure you’re supported, and Oriel works for all students.”

Foundation Trainee Pharmacists Recruitment Handbooks

Both the Scotland Pharmacy Foundation Training Year Recruitment Applicant Handbook 2021 and the England and Wales Foundation Trainee Pharmacist Recruitment Applicant Handbook 2021 can be found on the Oriel resource bank.

The trainee application process is different in Northern Ireland and students should check with their university lecturer or email Una O’Farrell, PDA Regional Official in Northern Ireland on: una.o’farrell@pda-union.org.

PDA members can contact their student reps by emailing: students@the-pda.org.
