Setting goals is an important part of a pharmacy student’s development. It allows them to assess where they are on their learning journey and plan how to achieve the best possible outcomes as they progress through their MPham. Establishing realistic and manageable goals can be especially beneficial when preparing for exams, placements, Oriel applications, and other key milestones.
This PDA guide focuses on SMART goals, a structured approach that helps students move from broad intentions to clear, measurable progress. This guide also includes a practical example of a SMART goal, along with advice on how to avoid setting goals that are unachievable.

Students are encouraged to make full use of the guide, take an active role in their learning, and seek support when needed. Support is available through their local PDA Student Representative or the PDA Member Support Centre.
Pharmacy students on an MPharm degree course in Great Britain are also eligible for support from PDA’s charity partner, Pharmacist Support.
