PDA urges members to ask their MP to stop thousands of patients facing prescription charges

As a member of the prescription charges coalition, the PDA is encouraging members to request their MP sign a motion that opposes the proposal to introduce prescription charges for those aged between 60 and 66, in England.

Early Day Motion 406 also calls on the government to set out a medium to long term strategy to scrap the charge.

Last month, the PDA responded to the government’s prescription charges consultation and discussed several concerns around the proposal during an interview with Jim Hawkins on BBC Radio Shropshire (19 August).

The proposal fails to consider the real impact it would have on the most vulnerable members of society. If the prescription price becomes a barrier to accessing prescription medicines, the poorest most vulnerable members of society will be faced with the hard choice of having to decide which medication to purchase and which one/s they could “go without”. They may also try to ration items such as inhalers, rather than take them as prescribed.

PDA members can click here to send an email to their MP asking them to support the motion.

What is an Early Day Motion?

An Early Day Motion is a way for MPs to demonstrate their support for a particular cause; they are like a petition for backbench MPs. If your MP is a Minister, parliamentary rules prohibit them from signing EDMs, so your MP will be asked to raise this issue with the Minister.
