The course offered young members the opportunity to network and learn more about the global challenges faced by the trade union movement and its history. It covered a range of important topics, including relevant political issues, such as anti-immigration rhetoric and the cost-of-living crisis, the recent Strikes (Minimum Service Levels) Bill, and international development cooperation.
Delegates at the YMDW
There were several interactive sessions which focused on negotiating and the effective use of media. Delegates were then able to put into practice what they had learnt by taking part in a mock negotiation and designing their own promotional materials.
The event received great feedback from attendees, including the PDA student members.
Liz Boateng said, “I found the Young Members’ Development Weekend to be a really immersive experience. I learnt about lots of different trade unions and how they play such an important part in the lives of their members, but more importantly how they always seek to represent and defend the rights of workers. I loved the different bonding activities and opportunities to socialise. I recommend this course because it was a great way to learn more and reflect on how I can be more active in my union.”
Natalie Mbonjani said, “I enjoyed attending meetings with individuals from various trade unions and hearing about their experiences and the impact of solidarity on affecting change in their small communities. I would recommend this course to those interested in understanding how unity can bring about positive transformations. The GFTU YMDW provides an opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals, something that every leader needs.”
The course was held on Friday 10 May to Sunday 12 May at Quorn Grange Hotel. The weekend event is held twice a year and is attended by a wide range of trade unions from across the UK.
The next YMDW will be in November 2024. PDA members who are interested in attending should contact [email protected].
