We express our profound disappointment with the recent decision made by the government regarding mandatory ethnicity pay gap reporting. More than four and a half years have passed since the PDA responded to the government’s consultation, advocating for the urgent implementation of this crucial measure. It is disheartening to learn that the government has concluded that “now is not the right time” to address this pressing issue.
The PDA firmly believes that transparency is the foundation of fairness and equity in the workplace. We have consistently advocated for the mandatory reporting of ethnicity pay gaps, like gender pay gap reporting, to identify and address systemic disparities faced by BAME employees. By shedding light on the income disparities based on race, we can work collectively towards building a more inclusive and just society.
The decision to delay the implementation of mandatory ethnicity pay gap reporting has let down countless BAME employees who continue to be remunerated unfairly due to their ethnicity. It is a stark reminder of the challenges faced by marginalised communities in the workforce. Without comprehensive data on the ethnicity pay gap, the issues at hand remain concealed and unresolved, perpetuating inequality.
We stand in solidarity with all those who have been affected by this decision, and we recognise the broader impact it has on our collective aspiration for a fairer world. A world where opportunities are not hindered by one’s ethnicity, but where merit, skills, and dedication are the sole determinants of success.
Gender pay gap reporting has already demonstrated its value, fostering open conversations and driving positive changes within organisations. Mandatory ethnicity pay gap reporting would undoubtedly offer the same benefits, illuminating the areas that demand immediate attention and paving the way for informed strategies to bridge the divide.
The PDA BAME Network calls upon the government to reconsider its decision and recognise the importance of mandatory ethnicity pay gap reporting. Let us come together to champion diversity, equality, and inclusion in the workplace. Our collective commitment to addressing this issue will not only benefit individuals but also lead to stronger, more resilient organisations.
We urge the government to act with swiftness and determination to create a fairer world, one that acknowledges the value of each individual’s contributions, regardless of their ethnic background. The time for change is now, and together, we can build a brighter, more equitable future for all.
