Back on the register 

Anita White, past President of NAWP, shares her experience of being called back in to help in the fight against COVID-19.

Here, Anita recalls the timeline of events that lead her to voluntarily come out of retirement and return to pharmacy. She shares her thoughts on why she decided to return, how she felt walking back in on that first day and how she handled the logistics of temporarily registering and arranging indemnity insurance.

“I’ll continue to be an unpaid volunteer. Proud as always to be a pharmacist and to help in the pandemic.”

Gender and the practice of pharmacy 

Dr Christine Heading, past President of NAWP talks about gender differences within pharmacy practice and amidst COVID-19

Since 2016, NAWP has given a talk to University College London School of Pharmacy students on why patient gender needs to be considered in all sectors of pharmacy practice.

This year, the cessation of classes because of COVID-19 meant that students had to settle for a recording of the 2019 version. Here, Christine shares some of the insights from these classes and touches on how understanding the role gender plays in healthcare is now of heightened importance.

International Women’s Day (IWD) 2020 

Daniela Rusalim, PDA Union Representative, East of England Region, tells us about the recent IWD event hosted by NAWP.

Here, PDA Union Rep Daniela shares her learnings from the event which saw her take part in talks and activities relating to inequality, women’s rights and how to take action.

“The women’s event on 11th March jointly organised by NAWP and the PDA was, without any doubt, a very insightful experience. Taking part was a great honour. The event was a great opportunity for sharing stories and successes as well as building relationships and providing encouragement.”

Rose Marie Parr: a profile on the longest-serving female Chief Pharmaceutical Officer With four national Chief Pharmaceutical Officers, the UK currently has a 50:50 gender split in these top national roles in NI and Scotland. However, given that two thirds of the profession are women, that is still under-representation.

As the longest-serving female Chief Pharmaceutical Officer, Rose Marie’s leadership skills and achievements demonstrate female pharmacists can reach the pinnacle of job roles. Dr Cheryl Smyth, PDA Union Regional Official, Scotland and Northern Ireland, shines a light on why Rose-Marie-Parr is such an inspiration to young female pharmacists.

Scotland and Northern Ireland Student Leadership awards 

Each year, the PDA is proud to sponsor the Pharmacy Student Leadership Awards. The PDA would like to congratulate and highlight the achievements of Scotland award winner Erin Gilmour and Northern Ireland award winner Shauna Murray. Find out more about the winners below.

Erin Gilmour at Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen: winner of the Scotland awardAs president of Aberdeen’s Interprofessional Education Society (IPE), where a variety of healthcare undergraduates learn from each other, Erin has been chairing the organisation, promoting it, and organising learning events, social activities and committee meetings throughout the year. She also updated the IPE’s social media presence. At the end of the year, the society finished with their highest number of members ever at 256 – the largest society at Robert Gordon University.

Shauna Murray, at Queen’s University, Belfast: winner of the Northern Ireland awardAt Queen’s University Belfast, Shauna was elected student representative for her year group, which involved contacting her peers, listening to their viewpoints on the course, collating this information, and feeding it back to the Staff-Student Consultative Committee. Shauna spoke on behalf of her group to encourage staff to make changes to the course. Shauna has also promoted the Pharmacy Society to different year groups.
